“I always take scotch whiskey at night as a preventative of toothache. I have never had the toothache; and what is more, I never intend to have it.” – Mark Twain
On Episode 93 I decided to make Charlie a cocktail using some of the Johnnie Walker Black Label that he got for his birthday. There are a handful of classic scotch cocktails that I was familiar with and considered making but when I found the recipe for the Mark Twain I knew I had found my drink. Simple to make, classic ingredients, and as it turns out, delicious. The lemon was a surprisingly appropriate compliment to the smokey scotch and the simple syrup and bitters rounded the taste out nicely. I highly recommend trying this at home. Just make sure to use fresh lemon juice. The lemon does come across quite strongly so if you may want to up the scotch to 2 ounces if you like the flavor.
The Mark Twain
1 1/2 ounces scotch
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Stir all ingredients over ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
