Bottoms Up #2 – Yelp Drinks

Bottoms Up #2 – Yelp Drinks

Has it been a week already? The brand new Bottoms Up podcast is back for episode #2 as your hosts Ginny Tonic and Charlie hit five bars for craft cocktails in under 90 minutes!

For this week’s show we took part in Yelp Drinks Cincinnati. This is their citywide, week-long (February 18th – February 24th, 2013) happy hour. Cincinnatians know how to have fun. As it happens, so does Yelp and so does the Bottoms Up podcast. For seven straight days, Yelp has coordinated a mix of 50% drink specials at bars and restaurants all around Cincy. These participating businesses have each chosen three of their best bevies to show off and with that in mind, how could Ginny and Charlie not join the fun?

Listen in as this duo of alcohol creativity races around to town squeezing as much as they can into an hour and a half.

Stop 1 – Mayberrys
From their website (mayberrycincy.com)

Located on Main Street in the original Over-the-Rhine entertainment district, Mayberry Gastro Pub offers inventive American cuisine in a casual, yet festive setting. Our regularly changing, seasonal menus feature creative twists on classic American cooking—a style we refer to as “grassroots American.”  Beer lovers enjoy sampling the regular rotation of craft beers pouring from each of our 12 taps, as well as our selection of limited run reserve bottles. We also offer a full service bar and an open-air courtyard when the weather’s nice. While walk-ins are welcome, we also accept reservations via phone and our website.

Stop 2 – Japp’s Since 1879
From their website (japps1879.com)

We specialize in craft drinks using the freshest ingredients made in house, and inspired by classic cocktails from the 1700s to the 1950s. Molly Wellmann heads our team of mixologists, who are not only experts at making our delicious cocktails, but are well versed in their history and the history of the spirits that go into them. At Japp’s, you’ll find many unique liquors as we emphasize small, craft distillers in our cocktails. Our selection of liquors is extensive and was hand selected by Molly for quality—not marketing!

What you won’t find at Japp’s are TVs! The environment here was designed so that you can have the authentic Cincinnati cocktail experience. The architecture compliments the over 100 year history of Japp’s as a Hair Store, the unique history of Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, and provides the ideal setting for you to enjoy drinks, as well as a conversation.

To find out more about our history, our friendly and talented mixologists, or to learn how to make some inspired and delicious cocktails, please look around the website. We hope it will convince you to come down and be a part of what makes Cincinnati great. We can’t wait to meet you!

Stop 3 – Taste of Belgium
From their website (authenticwaffle.com)

Taste of Belgium has two locations in Cincinnati and one location in Columbus. Our original location at Findlay Market in Cincinnati is a full line bakery. We started with Liège Waffles and crepes and we now do everything from waffles, belgian chocolate brownies, cookies to NY-style cheesecake, quiches, Belgian-style pizza and stromboli (we use beer in the dough!). We make everything from scrach.

In October 2011 we opened our first Belgian Bistro, at the corner of 12th and Vine St.  Our Bistro offers a wide variety of tasty Belgian dishes. As expected we serve our waffles, crêpes but also a variety of baguette sandwiches, Belgian specialties like boulets Liégeois, frites, stoemp, salade Liégeoise and our now famous Waffle n’chicken.

We have a wide selection of Belgian beers in bottle to depict all the country has to offer. We have beers to please any palate. We  have a fun, geeky European wine list, a small assortment of locally distilled alcohol and a diverse menu of Belgian specialties (including fondu parmesan, boulets Liégeois, carbonnades, waterzooi ….) and yes, we serve waffles all day and evening long. The Bistro is now open for dinner.

Our concept store is located in Columbus at the North Market. We have a selection of waffles, sweet and savory crêpes and locally roasted espresso drinks.

Stop 4 – Below Zero Lounge
From their website (belowzerolounge.com)

Below Zero Lounge located in the Gateway Quarter, a fast and upcoming, trendy and fun area of downtown Cincinnati, the center of some of the best arts and culture. Your favorite cool hotspot, you’ll love our trademark beverages including (for real) below zero vodka drinks. Live it up while lounging on our comfy furniture and join us.

Stop 5 – Neons Unplugged
From an online review (via Google+)

Neons Unplugged has one of the nicest outdoor beer gardens in Cincinnati. From Bocce to being dog friendly, Neons is the ultimate neighborhood bar.
