Quoting Tom Waits

Quoting Tom Waits

“I’ve always been afraid I was going to tap the world on the shoulder for 20 years and when it finally turned around, I was going to forget what I had to say.”

— Tom Waits, Speaking with Playboy Magazine in March of 1988

This easily goes down as one of my favorite quotes. It’s typical of Tom Waits that he would utter something profound in passing during a simple “20 questions” article with Playboy [read it here]. I have a lot of respect for this artist’s quirky nature, quick wit, musical experimentation and gravely voice. I could speed days working my way through his discography and leave with a welcome smile and there’s a part of me that hopes I look that road worn when I get to be his age.

If you’ve only a passing listener to Waits, I highly recommend spending an evening with your favorite drink of choice (the harder the alcohol the better) and his 1974 The Heart of Saturday Night album for a start. This is just an invitation to get you up to speed. Trust me when I say I’ll have more to say on this artist in future posts.
